Description
Figural Torchières of Goddesses Hygeia and Ceres
Inscribed on verso (bases): August 2, 1813 H. Hopper London (Hygeia);
Mar. 2, 1813 H. Hopper London (Ceres)
Plaster with white paint, brass torchières
Over-all in fine condition, some areas of touch-ups, minor imperfections, torchières of a later date
Provenance: Private Collection, Greensboro, North Carolina; Christie’s, London, Important English Furniture, 1997, lot 32.
Near life-size, these wonderful figures depict Hygeia holding a cup and snake and Ceres with a fruiting grapevine crown, both in contrapposto poses with raised arms holding torchières, standing on conforming, molded plinths. -
