Description
Pair of large gilt and patinated bronze Empire style planters
French, 20th Century
Height 50cm, width 62cm, depth 31cm
The planters, crafted in France, showcase the Egyptian-inspired nature of the Empire style in vogue during the early 19th century.
The pieces are of identical design and each one includes rectangular, litter-shaped planters. These are showcased to be carried by four patinated bronze Egyptian litter bearers, each one with eye-catching gilt details.
The planters are adorned with various gilt bronze mounts. The two larger sides feature an icon made up of several Egyptian symbols. An open-wing eagle tops the mount and is representative of power. In the centre is a crook and fall which symbolise the ruler’s (Pharao’s) strength to rule as well as be a shepherd. The two smaller sides are adorned with palmette-like mounts. Gilt bronze pilasters and edgings further adorn the planters.
The pieces stand on a stepped patinated bronze base with a textured top and gilt bronze edging.
Fitting both inside and outside spaces, this impressive and large pair of planters would be a superb addition to one’s collection. -
