Description
19th century French agate, lapis lazuli and gold cane
French, 19th Century
Height 85.5cm, width 6cm, depth 2.5cm
This remarkable 19th century cane, crafted by skilled French artisans, is a true testament to expert craftsmanship and timeless elegance.
The gracefully curved handle, meticulously sculpted from agate, is both aesthetically stunning and rich in symbolism, as agate is traditionally associated with strength and balance. Adding to its luxurious appeal, the gold collar and terminal are embellished with ornate scrollwork and finely engraved foliate motifs, creating an intricate and harmonious design. A striking lapis lazuli cabochon, set within the collar, introduces a bold touch of deep blue.
Personal inscriptions further elevate the historical significance of this superb piece. The gold terminal bears an engraved dedication, ‘A mon petit fils JLF’ (To my grandson JLF), indicating it was originally given as a heartfelt gift. Additionally, a cartouche on the collar is monogrammed ‘SF’, while the gold features hallmarks.
The cane’s tapered wooden shaft is finished with an ornamented ferrule. Its surface is embellished with engraved scrolling patterns, mirroring the elegant motifs found on the handle – an unusual feature for antiques of this type.
With its rich history, exquisite detailing, and premium materials, this antique cane is a highly collectible piece, offering both artistic beauty and sentimental value.
Provenance: By repute, the Estate of Charles-Maurice de Tallyrand.
