    A Carved and Painted Whirligig of Civil War Soldier. Second Half 19th Century, American. With Carved facial features and mustache, the figure wears a military hat with leather strap and a blue and white uniform. The rotating arms hold saber-like swords that serve as wind paddles. Head made separately and connects to body with pivoting peg, allowing for variable position. For example, see lot 95 from Weiss Collection Feb, 2007 as well as lot 400, Skinner auction Nov.5,2006.
