Large English Victorian Sterling Silver Horse Harness Race Trophy 1898
-
Description
Large Victorian sterling silver trophy awarded for harness racing. Made by Barker Brothers in Birmingham in 1898.Gobular bowl with cast horse cover finial. Leaf-capped and -wrapped scroll handles. Knopped support on raised foot with two cast hippocampi (that is, seahorses). Chased and repousse flowers and scrolls.
On one side in low relief is a victor’s wreath inset with scene depicting two neck-and-neck horses harnessed to sulkies (two-wheel carts) driven by whip cracking jockeys.
On the other side is a leafing scroll frame engraved with presentation: “Haverstock Amateur Trotting Club / Open Handicap 1 1/2 Miles / Won by Stambella the Property of Mrs. Da Costa, / In The Grand Time 3 Min. 35 Sec. Thus Beating All / Her Previous English Records by 11 Seconds / Driven by D. Lambeth / Winning Jockey of / The Club / Wembley Park / Feb. 23rd 1899”.
A magnificent homage to Stambella and those eleven seconds. Stambella was the product of a coupling between Stamboul, a champion trotter sold on the American market for $50,000, and Fanny Belmont, a similarly well-connected dam. From an era when lineage mattered.
Fully marked. Very good condition. Overall dimensions: H 24 x W 17 1/2 x D 11 in. Heavy weight: 140 troy ounces. #BZ740 -
