Bronze Standing Buddha Statue on Pedestal Sri Lanka
-
Description
A standing Buddha statue of cast bronze from southeast Asian island nation Sir Lanka circa late 19th to early 20th century. The upright statue is of a straight frontal stance with his right hand raised in Abhaya mudra, a symbol to dispel fear and ignorance and to ensure divine protection and safety. The buddha was rendered in a classical iconography that is specific to Sri Lanka, which is reflected in his broad shoulders and robust body, as well as the elaborate drapery on his robe and the flaming ushinisha top knot. His face is oval and elongated and impresses the viewer with serene expression and a faint smile. The statue was fixed on its original base (as shown in the last picture) and the cast is rather heavy. Some green patina is evident on the base.
