Description
This charming Chinese sancai-glazed pottery roof tile is in the shape of a horse sitting on its haunches with straight front legs, the body is glazed in deep amber, the long mane and details in the hooves are in a green glaze. The whole sits on a brass stepped pierced base.
In ancient China figural roof tiles were meant to be placed on roof ridges of public and private buildings as guardians and protectors and were meant to create a positive cosmic aura.
Condition: the glaze is abraded in spots and one ear is missing. -
