Chinese Scholar Stone Arched Lingbi Rock on Display Stand

Sold Sold
  • Description
A stunning ink black Chinese scholar stone of Lingbi type displayed on a custom wood stand. The stone features a smooth surface with lines and wrinkles as well as several interlinked grottos on one flank. The surface displays an oily textured patina, indicating its significant age since its collection. More interestingly, this particular lingbi stone showcases a rare elegant arch form, artistically displayed on a custom carved stand that accentuates and compliments its beauty. The arched form of the scholar rock is one of the shapes most desired by the scholars, as it reflects the mystery power of the nature to create the sublime and the surreal objects. Its formation is a reminiscent of certain exotic scenic spots in China such as the iconic elephant trunk mountain in Quiling, Guangxi Provence. Therefore it can be viewed that in the miniature form of the stone, the spirit of nature was instilled in a perfect way.
Lingbi stones originate from a series of mountain peaks in Lingbi County, Suzhou Prefecture in northern Anhui Province.
Scholar stones are priced by the collectors for their four qualities: shou (thinness), zhou (wrinkles), lou (hollowness), and tou (transparency). The history of collecting and appreciating interesting stones among the literati in China began as early as the 13th century in Yuan Dynasty, and it continued to this day. These stones were highly priced for their form and shape, which were considered containing the spirit of nature. They were displayed in the scholar's studio for meditation.
For a Lingbi stones with an arch form, see reference book Spirit Stone by Kemin Hu and Thomas S. Elias, page 47.
