Country House “Penfold” Letter Box
-
Description
A fabulous walnut letter box of the most famous and distinctive designs – the Penfold Post Box. These boxes are distinguished by their hexagonal construction and acanthus bud surmounting the cap, and this excellent example has an acanthus leaf carved dome above a beaded edge and conforming case fitted with a brass mail slot, hinged door with brass and glazed panel above a drawer with brass handle.
The original full size Penfold boxes were made by Cochrane & Co. of Dudley Worcestershire between 1866 and 1879 and were designed by John Wornham Penfold, 1828-1909 a surveyor and architect. The design is considered the most successful for letter boxes and are highly desirable and collectable.
