Description
The cup or mug described is a beautiful piece by Ferdinand Barbedienne, a renowned French bronze sculptor and foundryman who lived between 1810 and 1892. Created around 1860 and known as the 'de Warwick' cup, it is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. The materials used include gilded bronze and a red marble base, the same type of marble used for Napoleon's tomb.
The design of the bowl shows exquisite attention to detail. The gilded bronze and polychrome cloisonné enamels display a finely chiselled elegance. Around the rim is a decorative frieze of foliage and flowers in a stylised Greek reserve. In the centre of the bowl are four beautifully carved bronze faces. The wide bronze double scroll handles are adorned with two interlacements that are often referred to as 'Napoleonic interlacements', reflecting the influence of the Napoleonic era.
The cup is supported by a pedestal with a round and square base, also made of gilded bronze. The pedestal bears the signature of F. Barbedienne, indicating the artist's participation in its creation. In addition, there is a label under the base that provides further information about the piece.
Overall, this cup or mug represents the exceptional craftsmanship and artistic sensibility of Ferdinand Barbedienne. The combination of gilded bronze, red marble and intricate detailing make it a truly remarkable and valuable collector's piece. with this decorative item, you will not only acquire a remarkable piece of jewellery, but an object of French historical value. -
