Floris Meydam
At the age of 16, in 1935, Floris Meydam began working as an assistant in the advertising department of the Leerdam Glass Factory, where his father worked as a glass packer. From 1939 to 1943, he attended evening classes in Industrial Art Education in Utrecht. After training as a glass decorator at the Leerdam Glass School in 1943, Floris Meydam worked as a glass decoration teacher at the school from 1944 to 1947. In 1949, he took over the design department at the Leerdam Glass Factory. There, Meydam designed functional and packaging glass for production lines, as well as crystal decorative and functional objects for the art industry collections such as Serica and Unica. Floris Meydam was one of the most prominent Dutch glass designers. Alongside Willem Heesen, Sybren Valkema, and Gerard Thomassen, Meydam, after Copier, belonged to the second generation of designers who were influential in Dutch glass design. As a designer for the Leerdam Glass Factory and later as an independent glass artist, Meydam gained worldwide fame. He received numerous national and international awards for his many designs, and his work can be found in museums worldwide.
