Description
Georges Charles Coudray (1883-1932), a notable Parisian artist, crafted a remarkable piece: a fine 19th-century French gilt and mid-brown patina figure portraying an Orientalist woman playing a harp with a Sphinx head. This exquisite sculpture is signed "Coudray AP" and bears the seal of the Societe des Bronzes de Paris.
A plaque accompanying the sculpture reads "Tahoser, Prix de Rome," referencing the subject depicted and possibly indicating an accolade or association with the prestigious Prix de Rome, a coveted award in the arts. Coudray's attention to detail and mastery of form are evident in this captivating and evocative depiction of an Orientalist woman immersed in musical artistry.
Georges Charles Coudray, a pupil of Falguière, made his mark by exhibiting at the Salon from 1883 to 1903. Renowned for his exceptional Orientalist studies, many of his works were cast by the esteemed Société des Bronzes de Paris.
In the realm of literature, S. Richemond's "Les Orientalistes Dictionnaire des sculpteurs; XIX-XX siècles," published in Paris in 2008, references Coudray's contributions, particularly on page 79, highlighting his significance among sculptors of the 19th and 20th centuries who specialized in Orientalist themes.
