  • Description
A three-piece Bohemian enamelled black-glass vase garniture set
    Silesia, Late 19th Century
Centrepiece: 41cm high by 30cm wide by 26cm in depth.
Vases: 61cm high by 21cm in diameter.

This beautiful three-vase garniture set is made from enamelled black glass, and dates from late nineteenth century Bohemia. Attributed to Gräflich Schaffgotsch'sche Josephinenhütte, in Schreiberhau, Silesia, it is possibly crafted after designs by Franz Pohl Jr. The vases, of Classical form, consist of a pair of baluster vases with covers, similar in shape to amphorae, and a footed bombé centrepiece, similar in design to a Classical kantharos or oversized kylix cup. Each piece features splendid scroll handles, and are each raised on cylindrical pedestal bases, which have concentric rings decorated with delightful bands of a light-blue frieze pattern. They are decorated with superb white enamelling, embellished with gilding, and which depicts a variety of flowers and insects such as butterflies. The baluster vase pair also features grisaille woodland spirits or winged putti revelling in the forest setting. The set is of exceptional quality and beauty, and combines a Classical symposiastic influence with a charming and gentle European mythical woodland theme.
