Japanese Bamboo Basket by Higashi Takesonosai

Description
A hand-woven bamboo basket by Japanese bamboo artist Higashi Takesonosai (1915-2003), in the form of a traditional rice container. It was woven with thin bamboo strips in a diagonal twill plaiting for the lower body and twisted thousand-line construction for the upper body. The interior is finished in a black lacquer that is water proof, a rather unusual feature. The piece appears simple in form but done in very sophisticated techniques with utmost attention to details. Signed underneath and retains the original storage box (tomobako), which has inscription, title, signature and seal on both sides of the cover as shown.
Higashi Takesonosai is active in Kyoto, Kansai region. He studied under Kaneko Chikkasai and Wada Rinshisai. -
