Mechanical Bank "Monkey Bank". Circa 1925
-
Description
This bank, sometimes referred to as "Monkey and Organ Grinder" (which is actually a different bank) is one of the later cast iron mechanical banks made in the United States.
"Monkey Bank" was manufactured by the Hubley Manufacturing Company in Lancaster, Pennsylvania during the 1920's through 1935. It had quite a long run and was quite prolific. One of the more common banks, it has quite an enticing and aggressive action, much like, the later, "Trick Dog" bank (1920's version) by the same company.
To operate:
place the monkey, down in the "locked" position as shown in the first image; put a penny in the monkey's mouth. Upon releasing the lever on the side end of the base under the monkey; the monkey will rapidly jump up depositing the coin in the man's organ grinder. Coins are removed via a key lock trap underneath the base (see image).
The bank is in all original condition and original bright paint with no repairs, and even has it's original coin trap at the base, albeit it fits loosly, but has the key to tighten. It is one of the better condition examples of "Monkey Bank" that I've had.
Dimensions: 8 7/8" long x 3 3/16" wide x 7 3/4" high.
Note: Short one minute video showing operation of the bank is available as an
attachment via email upon request. -
