Description
JONATHAN SHLAFER TOTEMIC SHO SHUGI BAN WOOD SCULPTURES
Jonathan Shlafer is an Amagansett-based sculptor who finds his artistic muse in the landscapes of the East End of Long Island. With salvaged and reclaimed wood, concrete and steel as his mediums of choice, he carves and refines natural shapes, bringing forth his unique creations that encompass a diverse range of forms, from small to XL totems, sculptural pieces, and furniture. Jonathan’s craftsmanship extends to the finishing touches of his works, which are adorned with oils, bleaching, or the traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban / yakisugi technique. Through this method, the wood undergoes a charred transformation, revealing its intrinsic textual beauty. Each finished piece encapsulates a captivating contrast between the rawness of salvaged wood and the refined touch of Jonathan’s artistry.

Pavilion is the collective vision of Deborah Colman and Neil Kraus, both graduates of the master of fine arts program at the Art Institute of Chicago. From a longstanding interest in art and design, frequent buying trips to France and Italy have influenced the direction of the gallery to offer items that are not easily sourced in Chicago and United States. Postwar design has been the focus for 18 yrs and we also look forward to new design that crosses boundaries and dialogues as well to the past
