Description
Large antique porcelain and ormolu vase painted with a genre scene
French, Late 19th Century
Height 158cm, width 65cm, depth 46cm
This remarkable antique vase, inspired by the iconic Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory established in France in 1738, exudes elegance and grandeur. Its royal blue ovoid porcelain body is richly adorned with gilded details, hand-painted decorations, and finely cast ormolu mounts.
The vase is crowned by a porcelain lid featuring a charming ormolu mount of two doves nestled among flowers—a symbol of lasting love. Below, the body showcases two circular panels framed by intricate gilt borders. The front panel depicts a Rococo-style scene of a couple on horseback with a serene landscape and architectural ruins in the background, signed by the artist. The reverse continues the tranquil setting, creating a harmonious design.
Supporting the vase is a decorative socle with foliate details and an ornate ormolu base. Slender acanthus-wrapped handles rise gracefully, culminating in lyres with foliage-inspired arms. Behind each handle, seated cherubs add a whimsical touch. The square plinth base, adorned with shields, tassels, and drapery, completes the design.
Blending Rococo opulence with Neoclassical refinement, this vase makes an exquisite centrepiece for any sophisticated interior or collection. -
