Description
Orientalist bronze figure of a water carrier by Marcel Debut
French, Late 19th Century
Height 66cm, width 20cm, depth 25cm
This large bronze figure was sculpted by the French artist Marcel Debut and cast by the Oudin foundry in Marseille (‘Debut’ and ‘Oudin’ are signed to the base).
The figure represents a walking male figure who holds a bindle over his shoulder, which in turn carries a copper water jug. In his left hand, the figure holds a steel pliers. The surface of the figure is exceptionally finely cast and skilfully patinated, the warm tones of the patination working wonderfully with the colours of the copper jug and steel pliers. The figure is distinctively Orientalist in feeling—a genre of art for which Debut was celebrated.
