This large, hand-sculpted, irregularly shaped vase object with warm, iron-colored glaze and uneven, tactile surface with incised decoration and supporting tail evokes ancient sites and alludes to distant cultures, most probably the Etruscans who inhabited the Florentine hills long before Marcello Fantoni and whom he claimed as his ancestors. Unrefined, rough modeling, colored squares and incised decoration, reminiscent of Fantoni’s own contemporary vases, objects and figures such as the crusaders here connecting the past with the present.
