Description
Pair of silver-inlaid brass Art Deco serpent candle holders
Continental, c.1920
Height 32/34cm, width 9cm, depth 30cm
Dating to the time of the Art Deco period in the first quarter of the twentieth century, these fine lighting pieces are a pair of brass and silver-inlaid candle holders or lanterns. They bear a pair of candle-mounts which are inscribed with Arabic characters, and consist of snakes with long, twisting coils, that act as counterweights to the lighting mounts. The scales are in alternating copper and silver, in a stylised pattern typical of the Art Deco, and similar exotic geometric motifs adorn the front. Small cyan coloured beads form the eyes, and the head of one of the snakes is pierced. Combining European design with an exotic Oriental appeal, they are excellent works of early twentieth century innovative design. -
