WITH VINES ON TOP, WITH INLAID ANGELIC PORTRAITS ON THE SIDES, AND HAVING A GERMAN INSCRIPTION IN FRONT
Berks County, Pennsylvania, Circa 1790.

Provenance: George Horace Lorimer, Pennsylvania; George B. Lorimer, Georgia; Private Collection, New York.
Reference: A tall chest with similar inlays has been researched and was made in Berks County.
Some have postulated that the portraits on either side of the chest are actually George and Martha Washington. A loose translation of the German inscription is as follows: Flowers of many kinds, Remain in their place, And make it pleasing, Close to these places, By themselves, The beautiful and lovely violets blooming delight our hearts. -
