Salviati, Murano, sphere vase on a tall foot in heavy purple glass, engraved signature, ca. 1970
Salviati is one of the big Murano glass factories, founded in 1859 by a lawyer from Vicenza, Antonio Salviati, a passionate scholar of glass mosaics (St. Mark's Basilica). In fact, the first production, the headquarters, at the time was not yet in Murano, but in Dorsoduro, in the center of Venice, was mainly dedicated to the creation of glass mosaic tiles. The headquarters moved to Murano about ten years later, thanks to a series of investments by English entrepreneurs, which allowed the launch of Salviati products, alongside mosaics, functional objects, such as glasses, bottles, jugs and plates, also decorative objects and sculptures in glass, internationally. Starting from the 1950s, the production of large-scale lighting elements and the collaboration with designers and artists for the design began.
