Description
Set of Sitzendorf porcelain figures of the four seasons
German, 20th Century
Largest: Height 14cm, width 10cm, depth 7.5cm
Smallest: Height 14cm, width 9cm, depth 7.5cm
These German porcelain figures depict typical representations of the four seasons – a popular topic within art history. The set has been crafted by makers from the Sitzendorf Porcelain Manufactory which is known for creating high-quality figures.
Both Summer and Spring are depicted in very similar poses and clothing. The ladies are dressed in a white top, red corset, and polychrome skirts decorated with floral patterns. The figure representing Summer is sitting on a sheaf of wheat holding a rake and sickle, while Spring is portrayed holding a basket full of flowers.
Autumn is depicted as the only male figure in the set. He is dressed in equally beautiful garments as that of the ladies, his hand raised high holding a bunch of red grapes. Next to him is a basket full of the same fruits while more can also be observed on the floor surrounding the figure.
The young lady dressed in a maroon, fur-lined coat with a hat of a similar design is used to represent Winter. She is keeping warm by holding her hands above the fire.
Each piece includes the blue Sitzendorf mark on the underside and elegant gilding to the bases.
Of a charming design, this set of porcelain figures is a desirable addition to one’s collection of European porcelain.
