Wall-Mounted Carved Wood Sculpture of Igbo Mask Nigeria, Late 19th Century
-
Description
Igbo mask Nigeria, Late 19th century. Measures: 16.5" H x 14" D x 8" W. An expertly carved Igbo maiden spirit mask from Nigeria elaborately carved with three high hair crests dramatically pairing positive and negative space. These masks are used mostly during the agricultural festivals or the funerals of prominent society members. The mask is carved with fine and delicate features with light coloring reflecting Igbo esthetics. The features are drawn on the face reminiscent of designs traced by woman on various parts of their bodies. The complex hair style is composed of hair with a thin covering of clay or charcoal. Various ornaments and shells are incorporated into the hair. An impressive example of these delicate Igbo esthetics.
