-
Description
This streamlined pair of bookends was designed by Walter Von Nessen for the Chase Company, circa 1930. Von Nessen was an influential designer who began his American career in the 1920s fabricating lighting fixtures that quickly became popular with architects due to their sleek beauty and functionality. Throughout the 1930s Von Nessen continued to create innovative architectural lighting but also expanded to household accessories. With their simple geometric construction and elegant proportions, this pair of bookends epitomizes Von Nessen's design aesthetic. Each bookend has a slender, rectangular copper base. A brass block rests on one side this base to which a copper spiral is attached. The pair would make a striking addition to a bookshelf or tabletop. Signed "Chase Co." on the back of each.
