Description
Large Aubusson carpet with floral and musical motifs
French, c. 1900
Width 372cm, depth 264cm
This large Aubusson rug is a grand representation of the heritage and artistry for which Aubusson's illustrious weavers are renowned. At the heart of the rug's design, two concentric ropework frames provide a striking and distinct structure: an external rectangular motif enclosing an internal oval one.
At the centre of the carpet, ensconced within the oval framework, resides an enchanting display of floral beauty. This floral arrangement features an assortment of roses and other quaint blossoms, all flanked by a green foliage. This central spectacle is surrounded by an intricate floral vine ornamentation, mirroring the form of the oval and introducing a gentle, organic fluidity to the composition.
Within the confines of the rectangular corners, beyond the oval, at each corner of the central panel, musical instruments are portrayed, each musical tableau is embraced by additional floral elements, establishing a pleasing equilibrium within the overall composition.
The carpet's palette, consisting of subdued, pastel shades, radiates a calm and welcoming atmosphere. These tranquil tones produce an elegant and joyful ambiance, beautifully complementing the carpet’s soft pink background.
Framing the carpet is a giltwood-like border, adorned with a closed acanthus leaf pattern in a complementary palette. This border underscores the refined aesthetics and meticulous attention to detail that typify Aubusson's timeless creations.
Echoing the noble Aubusson tradition, this rug is a manifestation of centuries of honed techniques and artistry. Its intricate composition, charming floral and musical themes, and congruous colour palette, all bear testimony to the distinguished craftsmanship of its creators and to the Aubusson heritage. -
