Description
A modernist wool woven tapestry designed by French artist and designer Mathieu Mategot (1910-2001) circa 1960s. The piece is signed with Mate?got and monogrammed TMP fino (Manufactura de Tapecarias de Portalegre). Mate?got was one of the most renowned French designers in 1950s. Mate?got continued to work on tapestry while engaged in other design activities and from early 1960s, Mate?got devoted himself full time to tapestry work and became one of leaders of the modern movement in French tapestry. His tapestries today hang in many major buildings around the world. Starting in 1964, he started collaborating with TMP, a fine tapestry atelier in Portugal. Some of his most intricate designs were produced there.
