Swedish Flat Woven Rug by Solveig Westerberg
-
Description
This circa-1945 vintage Swedish rug by Solveig Westerberg (signed with the initials SW) features an all-over design of small diamond shapes, bordered by circular patterns and geometric abstractions in shades of green, purple, blue, and red against a striated background of light and dark brown. In Sweden, wool carpets and antique area rugs have been hand-knotted for centuries, evolving in form and function over time. By the early twentieth century, this craft had become a significant artistic and cultural practice across Sweden, with designers creating vintage Scandinavian rugs that gained international appeal.
