A Royal Copenhagen Ichthyological porcelain part dinner 'fish-service'

$ 22,500
  • Description
    A Royal Copenhagen Ichthyological porcelain part dinner 'fish-service'
    Danish, 20th Century
    Plates: height 2cm, diameter 24cm
    Long dish: height 5cm, width 60cm, depth 24cm

    Consisting of thirteen pieces: one circular tureen and cover, one gravy boat, one large central oval serving dish and a set of ten dinner plates, this very fine porcelain part dinner or 'fish-service,' as they are sometimes affectionately called, is the work of the Royal Copenhagen porcelain manufactory of Denmark.

    Made during the 20th century, the pieces are various applied and decorated with depictions of fish, in light, sweeping, underwater floral blossoms and reeds, with blue borders raised in relief and embellished with areas of gilding. To the back of each piece there is the name of the fish species depicted alongside the markers marks.

    The borders are a particular highlight: raised in relief, they feature wonderfully executed sections with scales, while the tails, heads, gills, and fins, are further topped with delightful gilt embellishments. Beautiful decorative pieces, full of character and style, they represent some of the finest works of Danish porcelain, from an esteemed and leading manufactory.
