Description
Set of three British porcelain plates with flowers by Copeland
British, c. 1880
Height 2cm, diameter 24cm
Crafted by Copeland, this charming set of three plates is adorned with a selection of flowers including lilies of the valley, tulips, and carnations. Copeland (now called Spode) was a British porcelain manufacturer that operated under the leadership of the Copeland family in the 19th and 20th centuries. They exhibited several times at important international exhibitions such as the one in Paris in 1878.
Each plate has a lobed rim adorned with gilded patterns. Between the gilded dots and Xs is a pattern consisting of oval-shaped motifs filled with a bright blue centre placed on a pink background. The central panel of the plates has been left plain exposing the bright white porcelain. The flowers are rendered in shades of red, yellow, green, and cream, their depictions including a plethora of fine details.
All plates feature the Copeland mark on the underside as well as hand-painted inventory numbers.
