French silver wine taster, 18th century. Round with curved sides; snake ring handle has squiggly tail. Engraved owner’s name in shaded block: J. P. Berard Ptre. That last is a shortened version of “prêtre” or priest. Under the Ancien Regime membership in the First Estate (the clergy) was accompanied by certain prohibitions, but drinking was not among them. Marked. Very good condition.
