Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Small Bowl Designed by Sigvard Bernadotte
-
Description
This hand-spun and chased small bowl was designed by Sigvard Bernadotte for Georg Jensen Silversmiths. The inscription along the bottom rim reads: "Sigvard (in hand-writing script), 823, Denmark, Georg Jensen Silversmiths LTD (under a capital E in an askew square), Sterling 925.S".
Sigvard Bernadotte (1907-2002) was the second son of King Gustav VI Adolf of Sweden. When he married a commoner, he was excluded from the line of succession and lost his Swedish royal titles. He became a successful industrial designer, including one of the most significant designers for Georg Jensen. His aesthetic was Modernism as opposed to the earlier Jensen styles of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. His pieces remain popular today and are admired for their top-quality design. -
