IMPORTANT MID 18TH CENTURY CIRCULAR FAIENCE BASIN OR SHOW PIECE
Large circular dish in monochrome blue and white. In the centre a scene depicting a body of water with a ship in the middle and further boats in the distance. On the left bank is a castle with a flag flying above the turret. On the right bank are ruins of a building. In the center foreground where the two banks meet are two seated figures painted in the Chinese style. Trees surround the whole scene. The border of the basin is painted with scrolls, flowers and leaves.
The whole raised on a pied-douche with hand painted decoration. Nevers, France c. 1760.
This piece is unusual in its scale and it is possible that it was made as a showpiece as a commission.
