Louis Mendez Very Large Earthtone Stoneware Bowl.
-
Description
Louis Mendez (1929-2012) very large earthtone stoneware bowl. Exterior surface has drippy glaze and interior has cream and brown, blue green glaze. The bowl is in very good condition, with appropiate wear for its age. A few minor chips in rim, but they have been there since we got the bowl. The bowl still has the NFS sticker on it from Louis Mendez studio in Goshen NY.
The bowl is from Louis Mendez's highly productive and creative early 1960s period. In 1963 Louis Mendez had a show at the Victoria and Albert show in London, the same year this bowl was made. Signed "Mendez '63" to the underside.
In 2007, when I visited Louis Mendez in his NYC studio, we showed him the bowl. Diane shared "That decorative style and stoneware clay body were typical of Louis’s work in the late ‘50s and early 60’s. This particular piece would have been done while he was teaching at the Philadelphia College of Art."
It is signed and dated 1963. -
