Description
A glazed ceramic tea bowl (chawan) by Japanese American artist Toshiko Takaezu (American, 1922 - 2011). The hand-built bowl is covered with a striking matte glaze in mustard yellow with inclusion of mottled matrix of burnt orange and iron brown and even unexpected specks of blue. The glaze pattern is random and poetic like an abstract painting that demands a meditative approach of viewing. The base is glazed and carved with the artist's insignia.
The bowl is a from a private collection in Hawaii.
The artist's work was heavily influenced by the Japanese ceramic tradition and aesthetics. -
