Description
19th century Suzani Bukhara textile work
Uzbekistan, Late 19th Century
Height 315cm, width 210cm
This cotton hand-embroidered textile, made in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, depicts a central star-shaped medallion surrounded by other medallions in different hues of pink, with the accompanying leaves depicted in deep greens.
Probably made by a bride and her mother as part of her dowry, it would have been presented to the groom on his wedding day. Natural dyes such as cochineal for the red and saffron for the yellow would have been used in this antique example.
