Description
American Sampler, 1840, by Cornelia Metford. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Simple line border. Colours black, light brown, dark brown and green. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-9. Signed and dated, 'Cornelia B Metford. New York. 1840''. (could be 1846, but hard to tell.) Placename New York, USA is present. A scattering flower motifs. Framed in an old wood frame with glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to card. Frame backed with cardboard and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Origin: United States Period: 1900-1919 Condition: Good. Good. No holes. No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong. Very slight colour run around the signature. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound and in our opinion could be hung 'as is'.
