Victorian Sampler, 1840, By Elizabeth Ann Fox. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, mainly in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours green, dark brown, copper, gold, silver, black and blue. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-9. Verse reads, 'Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand, As the first Effort of an infants Hand, And while her Fingers on the Canvas move, Incline her tender Heart to seek thy love.'. Signed and dated, 'Elizabeth Ann Fox Her Work Aged 10 Years 1840'. A good set of motifs, including a house with a garden, a castle, swans, butterflies, bees, potted flowering plants, stags, dogs and birds. Framed in an old, possibly original, black, ebonised wood frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is tacked to a wood stretcher frame. Frame backed with brown paper and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Origin: England Period: 19th Century Condition: Good. Good. No holes. A couple of pale patchy stains, barely visible. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading.
