Victorian Sampler, 1840, by Emma Lind. The sampler is worked in silk threads on a linen ground, in cross stitch. Meandering strawberry border. Colours red, green, light brown, gold, black, pink and silver. Verse reads, 'Jesus, permit thy gracious name to stand, As the first effort of my infant hand, And while my fingers o'er the canvass move, Engage my tender heart to seek thy love. With thy dear children let me share a part, And write my name, dear Jesus on thy heart.'. Signed and dated, 'Emma Lind Aged 9 Years 1840'. A few motifs including unusual grapes, a vase full of flowers, potted flowering plants, trees, butterflies and birds. Framed in an antique, gilt over wood, frame with rippled, old glass. Mounting: The sampler is loose mounted onto linen and pressed to the glass. Frame backed with card and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Origin: England Period: 19th Century Condition: Good. Generally Good. A few holes, inconspicious as they are backed with linen. A few pale patchy stains. No stitch losses. Colours are mostly good and strong. No colour run. Neatly and evenly presented. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound.
