Description
This an exceptional example of a British Sailors' woolwork entitled "Britannia Rules The Main"** which depicts Britannia*, the English Lion, a lighthouse, a sailing ship on the high seas and British flags. Britannia is represented seated wearing a beaded helmet and holding a trident; her arms and face are painted on either silk or paper. The work dates to c.1860 and is in exceptional condition. It is appropriately framed in a period burl wood.
Britannia symbolizes Great Britain.
The Main symbolizes the seas. -
