Large Antique Band Sampler, c.1725, by Mary Gatehouse. The sampler is worked in silk on a linen ground, in a variety of stitches. No border, divider lines in various patterns. Colours blue, light brown, green and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-7 Verses read, 'A GODLY LIFE WILL FIND IN DEATH A JOYFUL MIND'. And, 'IN TIME OF YOUTH REMEMBER WELL THE JOYS OF HEAVEN AND THE PAIN OF HELL'. Signed and dated 'Mary Gatehouse was Born One Thursday The 13 Day Of September 171. This Was Done The 11 Year Of My Age.'. Unusual set of motifs, including flowering trees, birds and flowers. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounting: The sampler is fixed to acid free card. Frame backed with brown paper and sealed with tape.. Dimensions exclude the frame and slip.

Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing wear and chips.
