From the Pacific northwest
The symbols used on Tsimshian totem poles depict clan affiliations and symbols of other important animals to their tribe. Often they were commissioned to document stories and histories of a particular family. From the top the totem depicts:
Moon with a face of a raven
Mountain goat with cloven hoof
A female ancestor figure
Head and forelegs of a bear
Provenance: Bequeathed to the Boca Raton Museum of Art, 1994; consigned to Concept Art Gallery auction, Pittsburgh April, 2018. -
