    From the Pacific northwest.

    The symbols used on Tsimshian totem poles depict clan affiliations and symbols of other important animals to their tribe. Often they were commissioned to document stories and histories of a particular family. From the top the totem depicts:

    Bear cub crouched over a sea bear (forelegs, pectoral fins, whale like tale)
    Raven holding the sun or moon
    Bear holding a bear cub.

    Provenance: Bequeathed to the Boca Raton Museum of Art, 1994; consigned to Concept Art Gallery auction, Pittsburgh April, 2018.
