French 19th Century Lithograph of The Procession of The Holy Relics of St. Mary Jacobe & St. Mary Salome
A beautiful lithograph telling such a wonderful story, all in black and white with gold gilt framing and gilt decorations. ‘In Camargue , between the Rhone River and Mediterranean Sea is a village legend and religious tradition transformed into a place of worship and pilgrimage unusual.
” Among the primitive saints from Palestine, Mary Jacobe and Mary Salome, close relatives Christ according to the Gospel, and their servant Sara, arrived in a boat without sails or oars, reached the Mediterranean shores The Camargue village where they settle takes their name. Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer. buried in the land they have chosen, these women are very popular in Provence and Languedoc, are subject to a pilgrimage which takes place on 24 and 25 May, and at the end of October. a crowd of pilgrims come to worship relics preserved in the upper chapel of the eponymous church, which descends at a ceremony sung and is carried in procession to the sea where they are bathed in memory the arrival of the holy women. Since the beginning of XX th century, gypsies around the world also come in pilgrimage to venerate Sara, became their patron. A crypt in the church dedicated to him.
