-
Description
Alfred Renoleau Palissy ware platter decorated with numerous fish, shells and leaves. Incised signature to the front, underglaze script monogram and Angouleme France to the back.
Alfred Renoleau (1854-1930) was born in Mansle, about 15 miles from Angouleme in western France. As the oldest son he was expected to continue the family hairdressing business, but after seeing an exhibition of Bernard Palissy in Bordeaux, he quit the business and determined to take up ceramics. He was ultimately very successful and his factory operated for more than forty years, employing up to forty workers.
For a discussion of Renoleau and illustrations of his work, see Marshall P. Katz and Robert Lehr, "Palissy Ware Nineteenth-Century Ceramists from Avisseau to Renoleau" (London and Atlantic Highlands, NJ: The Athlone Press, 1996) p. 169-179. -
