Description
Set of eight 19th century Bois Durci portrait plaques
French, 19th Century
Height 2cm, diameter 11cm
This set of 8 plaques has been attributed to the creator of the Bois Durci material, François Lepage. This unusual material is notable for its density and glossy finish, making it perfect for decorative plaques and other small desk items. It is often compared to the popular Whitby Jet.
Each of the roundels depicts the head of a different historical figure, who sits in profile. All but one of the panels depict famous composers, including Beethoven, Mozart, and Handel. A final plaque depicts Napoleon Bonaparte – this panel is inscribed to the reverse ‘Bois Durci’. The name of each figure is embossed around the edge of the plaque, and all eight are surmounted by small hooks for display. Each portrait is beautifully rendered, casting the finest details to ensure a likeness to the original model.
These elegant panels are wonderful collectables, that could be displayed either horizontally or hung on a wall.
