Description
Jankel Adler Erotic Work on Paper of a Standing Couple - Monotype and Gouache, 1940s
£5,500.00
As an artist Jankel Adler personified the European avant-garde in Britain in the 1940s, becoming a central figure in the art worlds of Glasgow and then London. Though born in Poland, Adler worked with Paul Klee in Germany in the 1920s, before being declared a ‘degenerate’ artist by the Nazis in 1933 and leaving for Paris. He finally moved to Britain in 1941 where he stayed until his death in 1949.
Over this period Adler kept a series of important notebooks, currently in the collection of the Tate, covering his development over this tumultuous period between 1933-1949. Taking us across Europe, from Germany to the south of France, to the unfamiliar Glasgow, these notebooks provided Adler with a means to work while his itinerant existence kept him from easels and canvas, containing many pages of studies and ideas which would later be worked into finished pieces. Importantly though, Adler was able to record his thought process and the fruits of his vivid imagination, transforming and reworking the world around him from the ordered to the chaotic and the figurative to the abstract.
This particular work can be traced back to Adler’s sketchbook No. 7, page 25 held in The Tate gallery archive. It would have been work of a very private nature, not intended to be shown in a gallery. Adler has reworked the image on a larger format using monotype and gouache.
