A Los Castillo Studio stone, semi precious stone and ceramic tile mosaic of a Mayan High priest representing Quetzalcoatl (the Mayan God of Wisdom) celebrating the Equinox in Chichen Itza, Yucatan, Mexico at the pyramid of Kukulkan.
The celebration is known as the “Descent of the Feathered Serpent" and is a National holiday in Mexico.
"The Descent of the Plumed Serpent is one of the most remarkable light shows created in the ancient world. The seven triangles of light (alternating with six triangles of darkness) can only be seen projected onto the staircase of the pyramid for about 20 minutes on the day of the Autumn Equinox and the day of the Spring Equinox."
The reason this is so spectacular is that it is almost incomprehensible how the pyramid could be built so that the projection of the triangles only occurs on a specific day.
According to Mexican lore the Plumed Serpent among other roles was regarded as the bringer of civilization and the calendar.
The pyramid is the most well-known of all the Mayan pyramids and is now included as one of the seven wonders of the world.
Los Castillo Studio mosaic panels of this size are rare.
The last image is the Los Castillo shop in Taxco c. 2006 with a similar mosaic.
The mosaic is in good vintage condition.
