Description
An 11-piece plate painting by Molly Hatch made of hand-thrown and hand-painted porcelain plates inspired by the historic textile collections at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London which have been sourced in collaboration with curators of the museum for an exhibition during the London Design Festival, September 14-22, 2013.
Artist Statement about RENDER:
In an effort to claim the functional surface as a painting surface, RENDER is a new collection of plate paintings and vases made sourcing the textile and ceramic collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum.
In the translation and re-working of historic fabric pattern to the ceramic surface of a group of plates, RENDER becomes an exploration of the relationship between the historic and the contemporary with artworks crossing over categories of decorative art, design and fine art. Through shift in scale, color and context, the compositions of plates both abstract and highlight aspects of the textile patterns, encouraging a new dialog in pattern.
Fascinated by how we live with objects, how and why we acquire objects and what happens to them throughout history, I see this exhibition as a reflection of the life of surface pattern through the decorative art continuum.
Hatch’s work has been widely collected, commissioned, and exhibited at art fairs nationally and internationally. In 2013, Hatch had a solo museum exhibition at the Philadelphia Art Alliance and was included in New Blue and White, a contemporary decorative arts exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In the spring of 2014 Physic Garden, a monumental 456-plate painting, was installed at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, and in 2015 Chronicle Books of San Francisco published a book of her work. In 2016, the Clayarch Gimhae Museum in Korea exhibited a selection of wall installations by the artist. As the artist works on a commission basis, custom works can be created through Todd Merrill Studio.
