Description
Renaissance style gilt bronze and porcelain plaque by Royal Vienna
Austrian, late 19th Century
Height 4cm, diameter 66cm
This fantastic porcelain plaque features some exceptionally splendid gilded decoration, but it is the central Biblical scene which makes it a truly special piece. Depicting the story of Jesus and the Canaanite Woman (also known as 'The Exorcism of the Syropheonician woman's daughter'), the scene takes after one of Renaissance painter Paolo Veronese's masterpieces, completed in circa 1548. It shows Jesus healing a woman of her ailment, one of his twelve miracles which appears in the Gospels. Around the central plaque there are panels of gilded acanthus leaf motifs on red ground, with diamond-shaped parcel gilt detailing showing Classical-style vases and birds in between. The charger is mounted in a gilt bronze frame.
There is an inscription reading 'A. Beer' on the central plaque, and an impression on the underside of the plate reading 'Christus und das kanaaische Weib', translating to 'Jesus and the Canaanite Woman'. The reverse is also impressed with the beehive mark for Royal Vienna. -
